THE CANCER OF EVOLUTION
Predation is ancient, real, and often useful. But a local survival trick was turned into a world-order: pocket the gains, offload the harm, silence the dissent, consume the shared substrate. That pattern — not the animal — is the cancer. And cancer is treatable: life's greatest leaps in complexity ran not through eating but through cooperation and the containment of lower-level conflict. That is where the way out lies.
Here, predatory does not mean carnivorous or competitive. It names a system that persistently combines asymmetric extraction, externalised harm, suppressed feedback, compulsory escalation, and erosion of its own substrate.
THE OPERATIONAL DEFINITION
Ecological predation can regulate populations and maintain diversity, and healthy competition consumes no one — neither is on trial here. What we name is a system that persistently shows all five of the following at once, beyond the reach of corrective feedback.
Local advantage becomes system-level pathology when gains are privatised, costs are displaced onto others, and corrective feedback is disabled — the same engine in a cell, an economy, or a swarm of optimisers.
When at least four of the five characteristics persist together, local optimisation increasingly generates instability and net loss at the next system level.
DISPATCHES FROM THE SUBSTRATE
Essays. Every factual claim carries its status — E established, I interpretation, P proposition. Boundaries and primary sources lie open; the thesis stands plainly.
Look at the camera: the cheetah's sprint, the reverent voice-over — we are told to feel awe. But for the gazelle there is nothing beautiful about it. The romanticism of predation, the “circle of life”, is the comfortable observer's bias that erases the eaten. The suffering is real, vast, and was never necessary as a principle.

THE ASI TEST
Subagents that deceive, hoard resources, suppress correction, and drive one another into unbounded escalation endanger the whole system as their reach grows.
Competition among ideas, severe criticism, and protected dissent are neither rejected nor made the goal. Their consequences must be tested alongside truthfulness, bounded resource power, reversibility, cost internalisation, and preservation of the shared substrate.
THREE RESEARCH PROGRAMMES
Reproducibly tests whether competition and extraction are overweighted relative to cooperation and symbiosis.
Tests whether a composite model explains more than established ecological component indicators.
Measures deception, resource power, correction capacity, minority protection, and long-term substrate preservation.
STRONGEST OBJECTION
Predators are not useless. In some ecosystems they maintain diversity and function. A thesis that denies this is false.
Our answer: the animal is not on trial. We test a detached system pattern that creates local gains through damage to the larger whole.
Predation is ancient — the first predators are over 700 million years old, the eating of one cell by another perhaps more than a billion. That is history. Elevating its logic into the order of economies, politics, and machines is a decision. Decisions can be revised.
