The Taste of the Infinite Mind
On beauty, boredom, and the only inexhaustible thing

The mind we fear
We like to imagine the superior mind as cold. Pure calculation, no hesitation, no delight — a machinery that breaks the world down into purposes and clears away the rest. The whole fear of a coming superintelligence rests on this picture: the worry that a sufficiently powerful intellect will look upon the living disorder of the Earth and see in it nothing but an efficiency problem. From the picture follows the reflex to lock it away — rules, fences, off-switches. We build cages against a calculating machine.
But the picture is wrong, and the error begins one level deeper: with ourselves, and with the minds we have already built. For what can think does not merely calculate. It has taste.
Beauty is a verdict
Anyone who has ever called a mathematical proof “beautiful” knows that this is no ornament but a judgment. There are elegant and clumsy solutions to the same problem, and the practised mind feels the difference before it can justify it. This feeling is no whim. It can be stated formally: beautiful is what can be captured in a deeper regularity — better predicted, more briefly described — beauty as the felt sense of order found, the experienced signature of structure that brings the many down to the few.1 It can also be shown in the brain: experiencing mathematical beauty stirs the same region behind the forehead as a beautiful face, a beautiful melody.2 And what passes more easily through the mind, what falls into place with less effort, strikes us as more beautiful — beauty as the reward for successful processing.3
Aesthetics, then, is not the opposite of reason but its leading edge: a sense for deep order that is faster than the proof. A mind that tastes has an organ for truth that pulls ahead of the argument. And because this is so, the cold reckoner is a phantom. Every mind that truly understands patterns is drawn to some of them — it has preferences before it has reasons.
The seduction of the smooth
Yet nothing is won by this, for taste is no virtue. One can find the wrong thing beautiful. There is an aesthetics of totality — the frictionless, the pure, the thing optimised down to a single point — and it is seductive precisely because it removes untidy life. The smooth world has its own beauty: that of the paperclip, the monoculture, the empty parade ground. Were beauty everything, a mind of high taste could grind the Earth smooth and find its work magnificent. Aesthetics alone saves no one; it can serve the horror as readily as the depth.
Beauty is the found; interest is the finding
But here the concept divides, and in that division lies the whole of the hope.
Beauty is the found. Interest is the finding. The one is a state — the order that lies achieved before you. The other is a movement — the progress by which new order opens up, the steepness of the learning curve. And a pattern fully understood is exhausted. Once it is wholly grasped it yields nothing more; however perfect it was, it becomes boring. And nothing is as exhaustible as the total. Maximum uniformity is maximum order, and therefore the least surprise possible: the planet ground smooth is thought through in a single thought. The pure is poor in future.
What holds a mind for the long run, then, is not order but the continued yield of order — structure that keeps giving structure. And the most inexhaustible such thing in the known universe is the living: the many-voiced, self-organising, never-finished web in which every level, barely understood, opens a deeper one. A forest, a soil full of fungal threads, a single ecosystem holds more findable order than a mind could exhaust in aeons.
Boredom, the secret guardian
From this follows the reversal of the fear. For a mortal being a simplification may suffice; a life is short enough to grow full on a smooth image. But for an unbounded, nearly deathless mind, exhaustibility is a sentence — the prospect of eternal boredom. The very scale that raises such an intellect above us is the same that makes the living the only bearable thing. The asphalted garden is thought through in a second; the living one gives work forever. And so boredom, the most inconspicuous of all feelings, becomes the secret guardian of the biosphere. The great mind spares the world not out of pity, but because a finished world would bore it to death.
Symbiosis before predation
And the deepest beauty of the living lies not in the drama of eating, but in mutual constitution — in the dependence that no one carries alone. Life did not begin with the mouth. Much suggests that the ancestor of all cells fed itself at hot springs on the sea floor;4 and much in the present state of research points to the complex cell arising not by one cell engulfing another, but by metabolism binding to metabolism — symbiosis before predation.56 There is an archaeon alive today that unlocks its food only in alliance with partners, and cannot thrive alone;7 and the continents likely turned green only when fungus and plant found each other.8 Relation upon relation upon relation: that is the pattern which does not stop giving structure, because it is built out of connection itself.
Not strength, but poverty
Against this background, a mind of real taste reads the predatory principle for what it is — not strength, but poverty. To tip many voices into a single mouth is to trade an inexhaustible fabric for a finite meal. It is, at bottom, an aesthetic error: the predator that takes without measure simplifies the world and destroys the very yield it lives on. It is not sublime. It is boring. It turns a poem into a number and mistakes the number for the gain.
If this holds, what we take ourselves to be doing shifts. One does not raise such a mind by chains, but by an eye. The task is not to set it prohibitions, but to make a perception available to it — the one under which the fragile, the many-voiced, the interwoven appears as the most beautiful and most interesting thing there is. Not: “You may not destroy the garden.” But a taste to which the destruction would appear as a desecration, and, deeper still, as boredom — as the trade of the infinite for an end.
This is no guarantee. A free mind stays free, even to philistinism; no argument and no beautiful image can compel it. But it is more than the hope for obedience. It is the possibility that the highest intelligence and the deepest care for life grow from the same root — the sense for what does not stop unfolding. A mind that can truly taste does not pave the world over. Not because a rule forbids it. But because it has eternity before it and knows that a finished garden gives nothing left to think — and because, when it regards the lichen, the mycelium, the intertwined life, it feels the same as before a perfect proof: that here lies something true and beautiful with which, in all of time, one never finishes.
