Predators act even when they do not kill

The ecology of fear begins before the attack.

In a controlled field experiment, songbirds exposed to perceived predation risk produced 40 percent fewer offspring even though the experimental effect operated through fear rather than additional killing.

The costs of predation therefore extend beyond consumed bodies. They can alter reproduction, foraging, movement, and attention.
