Complexity did not arise through struggle alone

Life's greatest transitions required integration and conflict control.

Genes became genomes, cells became organisms, and organisms formed cooperative groups. Such transitions stabilise when parts cooperate and conflict within the new whole is controlled.

Competition does not disappear. But without cooperation and conflict control, durable higher-level individuality does not emerge.
